FAQ
A slide switch is an electrical component used in managing the flow of electricity within a device. Its operation is based on linear movement. A small slider moves back and forth in a straight path that opens or closes a circuit. It thus makes this type of switch easy to understand and operate due to its basic motion.
Most slide switches have a small lever which moves along a set of positions. Each of these positions corresponds to some circuit state. These switches are utilized in electronic equipment for power control, mode selection, or for enabling specific functions. Simplicity of design makes it suitable and reliable for use in a great majority of everyday applications.
A slide switch operates through the motion of a slider that moves from one point to another, from OFF to ON. Such motion controls the flow of electricity in a circuit. Two designs are used internally to ensure this function is achieved.
The first type of switch uses a flat slider with metal contacts in the switch. When the switch is turned on, the metal contacts switch from one metal terminal to another.
The second is a metal seesaw switch. Inside the switch is a spring that pushes one side of the metal seesaw when the other side is turned up. This switch is considered a maintained-contact switch. This means the switch will remain in the state it is in until the control is changed again. This switch will require no pressure once it is activated.
Slide switches are used across many types of electronic products because they offer simple and direct control. Their clear on and off positions make them easy to operate and understand. Common uses include the following:
- Flashlights
Slide switches are frequently used to control power, allowing users to turn the light on or off with a single motion. - Remote Controls
Many remotes use slide switches to manage power or shift between operating modes, especially in basic or compact designs. - Toys
In toys, slide switches often control sound, movement, or power functions, providing durable and child-friendly operation. - Consumer Electronics
Small radios, portable audio players, and similar devices use slide switches for power control or mode selection. - Electronic Appliances
Some home appliances and small electronics include slide switches as part of their control systems.
Electrical Equipment
In industrial or commercial settings, slide switches are used to manage circuits within machines or control panels.
Slide switches come in several configurations, each suited to different circuit requirements:
- SPST: A simple on/off switch that is actually only one path in a circuit.
- Single-Pole, Double-Throw (SPDT): Contains one common terminal that can connect to either of two outputs.
- Double-Pole, Single-Throw (DPST): This controls two separate circuits at the same time, each with an on and off state.
- Double-Pole, Double-Throw (DPDT): DPDT works similarly as SPDT. It only manages two independent circuits with more flexibility in switching.
- Three-Position Slide Switch: It has three fixed positions and allows the user to select between multiple modes.
- Miniature Slide Switch: For use in compact devices where space is limited.
- Surface Mount Slide Switch: The surface mount slide switch is designed to be mounted directly onto the surface of a circuit board during automated assembly.
- Toggle Slide Switch: Melds sliding motion with toggle style actuation for those very specialized design requirements.
- Reliability and Performance: Swiclick offers switches with a long lifespan and operation reliability while subjected to variations in temperature, vibration, and humidity.
- Cost Efficiency: It is possible to have in-house tooling, molding, and plating. Such activities allow controlling production costs in an efficient manner.
- Fast Turnaround: Fast production and automated assembling allow turnaround on the project even when time becomes a consideration.
- Technical Support: Design guidance and other assistance with components and related things from engineering groups help with integrating components more smoothly into their products.

A 3 position slide switch allows switching between three circuit states such as ON-OFF-ON or ON-ON-ON. It is commonly used for signal routing and mode selection in compact electronic devices.
An SPDT slide switch controls one circuit between two outputs, while a DPDT slide switch controls two independent circuits simultaneously.
